The municipality of Cariño is located in the province of A Coruña, in the Ría de Ortigueira. The municipality consists of five parishes: Cariño (where the town center is located), A Pedra, Sismundi, Feás and Landoi.
Cariño derives from the Indo-European root kar, which means stone, and it certainly makes a lot of sense given the peculiar geological nature of the municipality. The rocks of Cabo Ortegal are some of the oldest on the planet and show curious and striking formations such as the "Os Aguillóns". This is one of the areas of greatest interest within the Cabo Ortegal Geopark project.
As is characteristic of any fishing village, the town of Cariño is located around its port. The colorful houses, the ornate balconies and the narrow alleys stand out, which make walking around here a pleasure.
One of its peculiarities is the spectacular beauty of its landscapes. Between the Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay, it offers exceptional beaches and seas.
In addition to interesting rural routes through the place, where birds of various types and different vegetation live, the town is famous for its gastronomy always linked to sea products, with excellent fish and shellfish. We give special mention to the beautiful beaches and coves located in this fishing town. With several options, such as the Concha and Basteira beaches, a long beach of fine sand, in which the dune area stands out.
In addition, in the old area, there is a small cove called Peiral do Campo or Mallorquín, which is accessed through some stairs and has a cliff area and several islets and, although it is a rocky beach, it is ideal for practicing sports such as scuba diving.
