The Tower of Hercules is the oldest Roman lighthouse in the world and the only one still in service. Probably built in the second half of the 1st century by an architect from Coimbra named Gaio Sevio Lupo, its light has always been a reference point for navigators.
It stands on a hill 60 metres above sea level, and with a height of 59 metres, it is the symbol of the city of A Coruña.
The current exterior cladding dates from the 18th century, the work of Eustaquio Giannini.

From its base and after climbing its 234 steps, you reach the viewpoint from where there is a spectacular view of A Coruña. In the distance are the estuaries of Sada and Betanzos, Ares and Ferrol and to the west, the Sisargas Islands off Malpica.
